OpenTRV approached PDC with the intent of developing their product concept for an innovative, new solution to help millions of homes cut unnecessary energy usage and reduce bills. Social housing, schools and public buildings are primary examples where reduced energy consumption can impact government/council spending dramatically.
The smart TRV’s function is to monitor the room which it is in, and automatically cut heat supply when it is vacant and likely to be vacant for the next hour or so.
OpenTRV came to us with a 3D printed CAD model, to be quoted for injection moulding. The parts had a high level of complexity, requiring multiple sliders in the mould tools with resultant high moulding costs. We developed and executed a design for manufacture project where we brought down the tooling cost by 50% whilst maintaining the aesthetics and functionality.
